I cannot tell the truth about anything unless I confess being a student, growing and learning something new every day. The more I learn, the clearer my view of the world becomes.
Sonia Sanchez (1934 - )
The purpose of learning is growth, and our minds, unlike our bodies, can continue growing as we continue to live.

| overview |
|
English 10 Academic emphasizes reading and writing about fiction and nonfiction. The goals are to foster the enjoyment of reading and writing, to create awareness of the connections between the two, to develop writing skills and to increase reading comprehension. Special emphasis is placed on short story analysis and extemporaneous writing in preparation for the CAPT.

General
- You are expected to be in class on time, ready to work with the proper materials (book, pen, paper, etc.) and having read assigned material and prepared assigned homework. Chronic late arrivals to class will naturally result in a lowered grade. Unexcused absences will result in a zero for all work for that day, including quizzes and tests.
- You will be given a weekly assignment sheet. Assignments and due dates will also be posted online . It is your responsibility to know what is due and when it is due so you will be prepared for class.
- All assignments are due at the beginning of class on the date assigned. Late work will receive a 10-point per day grade reduction, and will not be accepted after 2 days, resulting in a zero for the assignment. Computer, printer or email problems are not acceptable reasons for late work
- You are expected to know Canton High School’s policy on plagiarism. It will be fully enforced in this class.
- No food is permitted in the classroom. Bottled water is acceptable. (top)
Materials
- Three-ring binder with dividers for notes, handouts, and journals. You may not use a spiral bound notebook: I do not accept work torn from a spiral notebook. Please see separate sheet for notebook guidelines.
- Post-it notes for to use for in-text notes during class discussions.
- flash drive
Grading
- Major assignments (essays & projects) - 60%
- homework, quizzes and graded in-class assignments - 30%
- Class participation - 10%
